Austin has the best in trailers, trucks and back alleyways serving delectable bites. So what does it take to be successful? We interviewed two successful mobile food businesses to find out — Garbo’s and Gourdough’s.

New Food Images from Mulberry

Mulberry’s Chef, Kristine Kittrell, is launching her Spring 2014 menu soon. Here is  a sneak peek,

The concept was originally conceived by friends from Texas and New York who loved Austin and hoped local residents would respond to a cozy neighborhood spot with a European style. Long-time Austinites may recognize Mulberry Street as the former name of 10th Street in downtown and, coincidentally, several of the New York founders lived on the renowned Mulberry Street in Manhattan. The name Mulberry reflects the influences and inspiration drawn from both Austin and New York.

Gourdough’s Public House Releases New $7.99 Lunch Menu

For immediate release: (Austin, TX) – The home of Austin’s most famous donut, Gourdough’s Public House is proud to release a new menu and a list of daily specials that are aimed at putting a focus on the midday meal. Their offerings feature lighter executions of their indulgent dishes, such as the Dirty Bird and their legendary burger, which is presented at half the size. In addition to smaller portions that are more reasonable for the scheduling demands of today’s professional, Gourdough’s Public House now serves a more classic lunch of soup and salad.

Still maintaining their claim to fame in the lunch offerings, the restaurant adds daily weekday specials that are selected from the more popular items on the full menu. With a fixed price of $7.99 for the lunch menu and weekday specials, the new focus promises to satisfy the midday hunger of Austinites, as well as their craving for something unique, creative and different than the typical lunch.

About Gourdough’s Public House
Gourdough’s began as the donut trailer dream of Paula Samford and Ryan Palmer on South Lamar, frequented by folks craving funky donuts with unexpected ingredient combinations. The trailer did so well (and was even loved by the Travel Channel’s infamous Anthony Bourdain) that they opened a brick-and-
mortar version of their donut haven last Halloween–Gourdough’s Public House–featuring its beloved donuts, but also incorporating full-on donut-infused entrees and specialty cocktails. Like its historic public house predecessors, Gourdough’s Public House strives to connect its patrons in the spirit of funk-laced starch, local brews and plenty of booze. Salty, savory, or sweet, the Public House celebrates the delightful taste of sin.

Hyde Park Yoga Company is open to the public!

1378089_170651766474192_189191573_nHyde Park Yoga Co. officially opened its doors on November 6. The boutique Hyde Park yoga studio, offering a handful of unique amenities and a charming, antique-inspired setting was warmly welcomed to the neighborhood.

Offering a variety of both traditional and specialized yoga classes for all levels, Hyde Park Yoga Co. is the first studio in Austin to offer “CORE STRENGTH VINYASA” as developed and taught by Sadie Nardini and Tyler McCoy. But the studio has many other qualities that will make it stand out from the many other studios in Austin.

Hyde Park Yoga Co. is located at 51st Street and Duval between Flight Path Coffee and The Peddler. The studio will feature some of the most seasoned and experienced yoga teachers in the city, while offering affordable membership plans and budget-friendly drop-in rates.

The studio has been carefully designed with classic antique touches and vintage charm, and is proud to be the only yoga studio in Austin with a parlor, allowing class attendees to relax before or after a class. The parlor was designed for its students and staff to sit, read a book from their collection and have a cup of tea or a glass of wine, so the calm and stress-relieving benefits of the practice can carry over once their class is over.

Unlike many studios who charge rental fees, Hyde Park Yoga Co. also offers free mats and towels for its students to borrow for their classes. The studio will also host family-friendly “yoga church” each Sunday followed by breakfast and community gathering.

Because yoga should be a lifestyle and not just a practice, the studio has been designed to optimize the benefits of yoga with a cozy and stylish space, unique offerings and social events. Hyde Park Yoga Co. would like to extend an invite to any interested media to its grand opening event on November 16, or to swing by the studio, take a class, chat with the owners, have a glass of wine and unwind in what will surely be one of Austin’s most-loved studios now that its doors are opened to the public.

ZINK Is All You Need

Want a handbag that is as unique as Austin? Then look no further than ZINK.

Ben Freedland, creative director at ZINK, describes the local handbag collection as where your journey begins:

ZINK is a celebration of experiences, discoveries and passions. Our collections reimagine tried-and-true favorites and transform them through the creativity of our global community of artisans. Each season, we’ll share with you the people, places and things that inspire us, from the naturally dyed, hand-loomed textiles of the village artisan to the contemporary details we find relevant for today’s modern world.

The journey of ZINK might have begun in New England, but it continues to traverse the globe: To Italy, for superb canvas in a rainbow of magnificent hues. To South America, for stunning textiles hand-loomed by artisans practicing age-old traditions. To Southeast Asia, for indigo fabrics and naturally dyed textiles. To rural Japan, for the finest organic cotton. These are just some of the elements that go into creating ZINK’s meticulously crafted, timeless designs: the very fundamentals of chic adventure.

While the journey of ZINK may have begun in Freedland’s home of New England, it makes its stop in Austin until it joins you with your next journey across the block or across the globe.

Dr. Robert W. Hausman uses the “whole person approach” to help his patients live happy, healthy and pain-free lives at Hausman Chiropractic & Acupuncture.

Dr. Robert W. Hausman has a unique approach when dealing with his patients – an approach that seems to be gaining momentum throughout the country. And with good reason, as modern medicine appears to be centered on “sickness care” instead of what Hausman believes should be called “wellness care.”

“I am happy to be part of a health profession that seeks to find and fix the cause of a patient’s pain or condition,” Hausman said, “and then aims to prevent future problems without the use of drugs, chemicals or surgery.” Being very passionate about chiropractic and spinal adjustments, Hausman promotes this as the primary treatment modality at his practice.

No Body Is Perfect: Understanding Eating Disorders

As the Texas legislature evaluates a bill classifying eating disorders as a mental health disease and therefore mandating insurance coverage, advocates call for a better understanding of eating disorders.

Several terms are used to diagnose eating orders. Any form of psychological instability expressed as an abusive eating habit can be labeled as an eating disorder. Others define the illness as eating or fitness habits disruptive enough to hinder one’s quality of life. Doctors will diagnose patients who show more defined symptoms with one of three terms: Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder. However, another term, “Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified”, is used to diagnose the many indefinite symptoms of eating disorders.

Defining what an eating disorder is not, on the other hand, is a little easier.

Hollee and Todd McCay wanted a backyard they would use that reflected their modern style and aod made it possible!

They met with José Roberto Corea and John David Fitzpatrick and in about a half-dozen meetings planned the yard. A walkway of Lueders limestone steps is carried through from the backdoor to across the pool and acts as a dividing line between the spa and the pool. On land, the black basalt gravel contrasts with the white of the limestone for a clean look similar to the kitchen. Pops of green come through in horsetail planted in tall planters.

“It’s perfect for this style of house,” Hollee McCay says.

A large îpe deck comes right up to the edge of the pool. The deck is shaded by an overhang of Polygal that allows light to still reach the deck and breakfast nook, but it shields from the harshest rays and protects the area from tree droppings.

The clean lines continue in the back of the fence where more basalt forms the base of carefully pruned slender trees that line the back fence. The space also has room for a fire pit, a trampoline area and a grilling area. They installed a mosquito prevention system, which allows them to fully use the backyard. For family and neighborhood soccer and football games, they use the large front yard, which now has an oversized porch.

The backyard and front yard really have expanded the family’s living space. “We try to live inside out,” Hollee McCay says.
